Individuals who believe that the local agency has taken inappropriate action in the application of a policy or law may have an impartial hearing officer review the case, hear their concerns and make a decision in the matter.

Appeals & Fair Hearings hears the greatest number of appeals in child support enforcement matters, with more than 4,000 appeals each year. Benefits and services, which includes food stamps, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), energy assistance, employment services and day care, is the second largest category, with approximately 3,500 appeals each year. The fewest number of appeals, but the most complex and time-consuming, are heard in child abuse and neglect, with about 265 hearings each year.

For more information concerning the appeal of a specific local agency decision, contact your local office. Your local office is listed in the local Government Listings in your phone book under "Social Services."
